The gap has closed. Why we are defaulting to SQL for 90% of our greenfield projects.
For a decade, the industry swung hard toward NoSQL (MongoDB, DynamoDB) for its flexibility. But PostgreSQL has evolved. With the robust JSONB support, Postgres now offers the best of both worlds: ACID compliance for critical transactional data and schema-less flexibility for documents.
The JSONB Advantage
We store our core business entities (Users, Orders, Payments) in structured relational tables. For attributes that vary wildly (like Product Metadata or User Settings), we use a JSONB column. Postgres allows us to index and query inside these JSON blobs with incredible speed, negating the primary advantage of document stores.
Operational Simplicity
Running a single database technology simplifies our DevOps stack. Backups, replication, and monitoring are unified. Unless you are operating at generic web-scale (petabytes of data), the complexity tax of a polyglot persistence layer is rarely worth it.
